"Park far away"..."Take the stairs"...this humdrum advice has been offered to individuals struggling to keep active since the realization of sedentarism. Whether it has come from a caring friend, a fitness article or your nagging Wellness Coach, we have all received these commonplace tips.
Don't get me wrong, those are GREAT and effective tips when it comes to increasing your steps and overall activity throughout the day. Here are some newer ideas for stepping things up (quite literally):
Always make a loop
Why go back the same way you came? When going for a walk or running an errand, try to make your walking route a loop. By doing this you ensure that you do not walk the most direct route both ways. You will also get to see new scenery and people and turn your errands into time that is also meant for you to relax and smell the flowers.
Don't overload your trips
Have a bunch of grocery bags to carry in? How about doing 3 or 4 quick and light trips rather than 1 or 2 awkward balancing acts? You may also save some eggs this way.
Beat the weather
It's raining and you know the gym is packed this time of day. You may feel discouraged and accept that today's exercise is just not going to happen...OR...you could take a trip to a nearby shopping center and window shop on break or after work. Maybe you can even get a head start on your Christmas shopping!
Trash the trash can
Get rid of both your recycle bin and garbage can by your desk. This will require you to get up and walk to the common bins in the room or in your hallway.
